Mobile Chassis VIN Stamping Service — UK & Europe
VINLAB provides a professional mobile vehicle identification number (VIN) stamping service,
permanently dot-peen marking your chassis number into the chassis, frame or bodyshell of your vehicle.
We come to your address, carry out the work to a clean, manufacturer-style standard, and photograph
everything before and after for your records. This service exists to support genuine restorations,
like-for-like chassis replacements and DVLA-authorised re-identification — it is not a service for
altering or disguising a vehicle’s identity.
Who this service is for
- Restoration & chassis replacement — where a chassis, bodyshell or frame has been
replaced like-for-like and the original stamped number needs re-applying so the vehicle keeps its identity. - Galvanised or repaired chassis — where the original number has become unreadable after
galvanising, welding or corrosion repair. - DVLA re-identification — kit-built, reconstructed or unidentifiable vehicles where DVLA
has assessed the vehicle and issued an authorisation letter for a replacement VIN.
Understanding the law — why this is carefully controlled
Your VIN is your vehicle’s permanent legal identity, stamped into the structure by the manufacturer. In the UK
you cannot simply stamp any number onto a chassis. When a VIN is lost through restoration, repair or modification,
the way it is re-applied is governed by DVLA (see DVLA guidance INF318, updated August 2025, and the
vehicle registration guidance on GOV.UK). In short, there are two lawful routes:
- Re-stamping the original number (like-for-like replacement). When a chassis, bodyshell or
frame is replaced with a same-specification part during restoration, the original VIN may be
re-stamped onto it. You must notify DVLA using form V627/1 (Vehicle parts statement) and
keep before/after photographic evidence. DVLA then issues an updated V5C with a note in the Special Notes section. - Stamping a DVLA-allocated number. Where the original is lost or cannot be proven — or for
kit-built, reconstructed or radically altered vehicles — DVLA assess the vehicle and, if it passes, issue an
authorisation letter quoting the exact VIN to be stamped. The vehicle can only be registered
once DVLA receives confirmation that this specific number has been stamped.
Deliberately altering, removing, obscuring or duplicating a VIN to change or disguise a vehicle’s
identity is a criminal offence (it is the technique behind vehicle “ringing” and can amount to fraud under
the Fraud Act 2006). That is exactly why we ask for documentation that ties the number to your vehicle’s lawful
identity — it protects you as much as it protects us.
What we need from you, and why
1. Proof of ownership — your V5C registration certificate (logbook) in
your name, or a completed V62 application. Why: we only carry out work for the registered keeper or legal owner.
2. Photo ID matching the name on the V5C. Why: it confirms who you are
and prevents anyone impersonating an owner.
3. Authority to stamp the specific number, which is one of:
- your DVLA authorisation letter quoting the VIN (for a replacement/allocated number); or
- for a like-for-like restoration: photo evidence of the original stamped number (and, where possible,
the retained cut-out section of the old chassis) together with your completed V627/1.
4. Vehicle photographs — the whole vehicle, the registration plate, and the
existing VIN locations. Why: to match the vehicle to the paperwork and keep a clear audit trail.
What we will not do
- Stamp a number that is not evidenced by your DVLA documentation.
- Create, alter, duplicate or obscure a VIN to change or disguise a vehicle’s identity.
- Carry out work where ownership or documentation cannot be verified.
We keep dated before/after photographs and copies of your documents as a record, and we
reserve the right to decline any job and to report suspected vehicle crime to the relevant authorities.
How it works
- Enquire with your vehicle details and the documents above.
- We review your paperwork and confirm whether your situation is one we can lawfully carry out.
- We confirm the price (stamping fee + travel) in writing.
- We book a date and travel to your location.
- We stamp the authorised number and photograph the VIN area before and after.
- You complete your DVLA process — we provide the photographic evidence to support it.
Pricing & coverage
The stamping work is a fixed fee; on top of that we add a simple per-mile travel charge based on the distance from
our base to your postcode. Enter your postcode in the calculator above to see your total before you order — there is
nothing hidden, and the final figure is confirmed in writing before any appointment is booked. We cover mainland UK;
jobs in the Republic of Ireland and mainland Europe are quoted individually.
Important — please read before ordering
By placing an order you confirm that you are the legal owner or registered keeper of the
vehicle (or are acting with their authority), that all documents you provide are genuine and accurate, and that you
are lawfully entitled to have the number stamped.
You remain responsible for notifying DVLA and for the vehicle’s registration. Stamping the
number does not, by itself, register or re-identify your vehicle — the DVLA process is yours to complete. VINLAB acts
in good faith on the documents supplied and is not liable for losses arising from inaccurate or incomplete documents,
or from any failure to obtain the necessary DVLA authorisation.
The information on this page is a general explanation of the current process and is not
legal advice. Please confirm your specific obligations directly with DVLA. VINLAB works in line with DVLA guidance
(INF318) and reserves the right to refuse service.
